Natural resources which are limited, have reached the depletion point due to the increasing population of the country and the world.
Therefore, successful projects have been implemented to use the available resources most intelligently and efficiently in a sustainable manner. These projects have been made compulsory by legal regulations in many countries in the world.
Turkey is also one of the countries increasingly gaining conscience in the sense of environmental awareness. The Zero Waste Project, one of the projects that covert the concept of fast consumption into sensitive consumption, converts waste into reusable natural resources, both minimizes waste rates and contributes to the national economy in many aspects by preventing waste. The Zero Waste Project ensures reusing most of the wastes.
How Does The Zero Waste Project Contribute to The Environment?
Thanks to the recycling of one ton of waste within the scope of the Zero Waste Project, 17 trees are saved from being cut down. Particularly thanks to the recycling of metal and plastic wastes, 95% energy saving is achieved.
The project is applied primarily in government institutions, and in line with developing technology, also in many homes for individual use. Thanks to the Zero Waste Project, thousands of trees are saved from cutting off in a month.
How Is The Zero Waste Project Implemented?
Primarily, the contact points and the team are determined for the Zero Waste Project. Then the current situation is analyzed and the needs are determined at the end of all the required studies.
Training and awareness-raising activities are initiated for this project, especially in institutions. Then, the Zero Waste Project is placed in the most accessible places to prevent cutting off the trees and as well as the material waste. The action plan for the project consists of 7 steps.
These steps are as follows:
- Determining the focal point,
· Analyzing the current situation,
· Planning,
· Determining the equipment after the needs are determined,
· Training,
· Implementation,
· Reporting,
· Determining the focal point,
Determining the Current Situation
Determining the current situation is very important for the zero waste management plan. Especially for the Zero Waste Project to be implemented in the institutions, the most accurate equipment is supplied depending on the type of waste from the offices and other units and the number of resources.
In the zero waste management, all the requirements to be used for the implementation of the action plan are determined. The color scale according to the waste types that can be used in the equipment and information boards in the institutions within the scope of the Zero Waste Project is determined as follows:
- Blue for paper and cardboard waste,
· Yellow for plastic waste,
· Green for glass waste,
· Gray for metal waste,
· Black for wastes which cannot be recycled definitely,
· Transparent for risky wastes and electronic wastes,
· Brown for organic waste,
· Purple for bread waste,
· White for food and nutritional waste.
In addition to this color scale, red color is used for medical wastes and orange color is used in containers within the scope of medical waste control regulation.
